Recent News on Final Fantasy Series and the Company *Square*
Final Fantasy : Unlimited *The Movie*We first heard of it just over two years ago, when it was still surrounded by the hype of the upcoming CG-extravaganza Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. We heard of it some more when it was released in Japan to critical - yet spellbound - audiences, then yet again when it neared the end of its 25 episode run...
...and then it was cancelled; the plans for season 2 scrapped into the obscurity of the unused media dungeon.
I am, of course, talking about Final Fantasy: Unlimited; the second attempt at an anime based around the hit Final Fantasy video-game series and the only one to be made up of a seamless blend of traditional animation and computer-generated imagery. The first FF anime, Legend of the Crystals, was set around the plot of Final Fantasy V and was never anything more than marginally successful. FF:U, however, was released with a promising start in Japan, but unfortunately soon fell victim to lowering audiences and the decision was made to discontinue production following the completion of Episode #25.

Its been 6 years now since FFVII was released and made Final Fantasy famous worldwide. 9 million copies have been sold and by and large it is the favourite of FF fans everywhere. It has endured to this day, a feat not achieved by many games made 6 years ago. Last October, about a year ago, Square confirmed that they will be developing a direct sequel to FFX, FFX-2, which is coming out in stores in North America in a couple of months. As the first direct sequel to any of the FF games in the main series, this astounding news quickly led to heated discussion on whether or not FFVII would also get a sequel, something fans have clamoured for since this most popular of FF games first hit the shelves.
The rumours started spreading after FFVIIs producer, long time Square worker Kitase revealed in an interview that he personally would like to see a FFVII sequel and also that some of his co-workers, such names as Tetsua Nomura (the character designer of FFVII, FFVIII and FFX as well as FFX-2) were like minded. However, afterwards Kitase completely denied the possibility of any sort of FFVII remake or sequel by saying that it would be impossible as they wouldnt be able to use the same engine for the game as they had in 1997 and so the whole project would just be too expensive.
